HIV and the criminalisation of LGBT+ communities

Join the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on HIV & AIDS; Global LGBT+ Rights; and STOPAIDS for a virtual parliamentary event:

HIV and the criminalisation of LGBT+ communities

19th May

3PM BST

via Zoom.

To end AIDS as a public health threat, we need to tackle regressive laws and advance support for community-led interventions. Globally more than 50% of new HIV infections are among key populations and their partners, including transgender people and men who have sex with men. 71 jurisdictions criminalise private, consensual, same-sex sexual activity which is one of the central reasons for why new HIV acquisitions and AIDS related deaths persist.

With the creation of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, there is an opportunity to further cement the UK’s recognised role as a global leader on LGBT+ and HIV rights. But this must be matched with action, particularly in light with the UK hosting the G7 and Equal Rights Coalition.

To mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT), our interactive panel event will bring together leading HIV and LGBT+ community representatives from around the world. Through a panel discussion and Q&A, they’ll be exploring the barriers that LGBT+ communities face from realising their right to health and how parliamentarians and the UK Government can advance the decriminalisation of LGBT+ and HIV.

Chaired by Rt Hon David Mundell MP, panelists included :

  • Joel Simpson - Managing Director, Guyana's Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD Guyana)

  • Simran Shaikh, Co-Founder of Rajmala Welfare Society and Director Transgender Health at John Hopkins University School of medicine

  • Jesse Sperling, Deputy Director, Kaleidoscope Trust

  • He-Jin Kim, Regional Key Populations Programme Officer, AIDS and Rights Alliance for southern Africa (ARASA)

  • Saoirse Fitzpatrick, Advocacy Manager, STOPAIDS

Our webinar panel will address the challenges and opportunities that bi/pan women parliamentarians face.

Roundtable on cervical screening in LGBT+ communities: Exploring the barriers and identifying opportunities to reduce inequalities

Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and the APPG on Global LGBT+ Rights would like to invite you to our event: “Roundtable on cervical screening in LGBT+ communities: Exploring the barriers and identifying opportunities to reduce inequalities”

Wednesday 24th March, 1-2pm – Zoom.

·         Dr Alison Berner (Specialist Registrar in Gender Identity)

·         Jacob Bayliss (CEO of Switchboard)

Despite this, cervical screening attendance has largely been falling for the last two decades with over one in four not taking up their invitation. Our speakers will explore common myths and misconceptions around screening among the LGBT+ community, including new research looking at the complex personal and systemic barriers trans men and non-binary people face. The Economic Case for LGBT Equality: Why Fair and Equal Treatment Benefits Us All

Join the APPG on Global LGBT+ Rights for an online discussion with M. V. Lee Badgett on her book The Economic Case for LGBT Equality: Why Fair and Equal Treatment Benefits Us All, moderated by Baroness Barker.

Wednesday November 11, 2020

We know that homophobia harms LGBT individuals in many ways, but economist M. V. Lee Badgett argues that in addition to moral and human rights reasons for equality, we can now also make a financial argument. Finding that homophobia and transphobia cost 1% or more of a country’s GDP, Badgett expertly uses recent research and statistics to analyze how these hostile practices and environments affect both the US and global economies.

Discriminatory laws, people being fired from jobs for their sexual orientation and/or gender identity, harassment and bullying in school, violence and hate crimes on the streets, exclusion from intolerant families, and health effects of stigma all make it incredibly difficult to live a good life. Examining the consequences of anti-LGBT practices across multiple countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, India and the Philippines, Badgett reveals the expensive repercussions of hate and discrimination, and how our economy loses when we miss out on the full benefit of LGBT people’s potential contributions.

M. V. Lee Badgett is a professor of economics and co-director of the Center for Employment Equity at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and she is the former director of the School of Public Policy. She is also a Williams Distinguished Scholar at UCLA’s Williams Institute, where she was a co-founder and the first research director. She has a Ph.D. in economics from the UC Berkeley and a BA from the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on economic inequality for LGBT people, including wage gaps, employment discrimination, and poverty, and on the global cost of homophobia and transphobia.

Baroness Barker is a Liberal Democrat Member of the House of Lords and Vice Chair of the APPG on Global LGBT+ Rights.

The APPG on Global LGBT+ Rights is an informal group of UK parliamentarians across parties from both the House of Commons and House of Lords, united in a common aim to improve rights for LGBT+ people globally.

APPG & Stonewall to co-host event on bi identities

Bisexual people face specific challenges which must be addressed in policymaking.

Following Bi Visibility Day, the APPG on Global LGBT+ Rights will host an event in collaboration with Stonewall to discuss the findings of this research and challenges facing bisexual people both in the UK and abroad.

Join us at 4.30pm on tuesday 29 September for a webinar to discuss this important topic.

The event will be hosted by Baroness Barker.

In discussion with:
Nancy Kelley, Stonewall CEO
Hafsa Qureshi, Stonewall Bi Role Model of the year 2019
&
Alex Hernández, Más Igualdad Perú

Stonewall's Bi Report indicates that:

  • ONLY ONE IN FIVE BI PEOPLE (20 PER CENT) ARE OUT TO ALL THEIR FAMILY COMPARED TO THREE IN FIVE GAY MEN AND LESBIANS (63 PER CENT)

  • TWO IN FIVE BI PEOPLE (42 PER CENT) HIDE OR DISGUISE THEIR SEXUAL ORIENTATION AT WORK FOR FEAR OF DISCRIMINATION

As one respondent to Stonewall’s Bi Report said: ‘Being bisexual means finding yourself excluded by gay people and straight people in social settings. I only tell my friends about my sexuality, meaning it is hidden from my family and my work colleagues. Bisexuality is a hidden sexuality through people’s lack of acceptance.’ Kendra, 32 (Scotland).

Stonewall’s Out of the Margins report addresses human rights violations faced by lesbians, bi women and trans people (LBT+) worldwide; and it is a privilege to be joined by Alex Hernández, from Más Igualdad Perú who contributed to the report from a Peruvian perspective.

How to change the law: a conversation on how legislative reform protects LGBT people

Human Dignity Trust and the All-Party Parliamentary Group on LGBT+ Rights host a global discussion on reforming discriminatory laws

The discussion drew from the Trust’s ground-breaking research that offers a step-by-step analysis of how the reform of discriminatory laws has been achieved, and identifies how it can be replicated. Each panelist brought their own experience of working on successful legislative reform, often in very different contexts.

Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow, Special Envoy for Women and Children, Belize
Bernard Georges, Member of the National Assembly of Seychelles
Téa Braun, Director, Human Dignity Trust

Hannah Bardell MP, Member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on LGBT+ Rights, chaired the discussion.
