Why We Need a Trans Inclusive Ban on Conversion Therapy

Following the Government’s announced dropping of protections for trans people in the proposed legislation to ban conversion practices, the APPG on Global LGBT+ Rights hosted an expert panel drop-in briefing on the need for a trans-inclusive ban.

The panel was chaired by the Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Revd Dr David Walker, and brought together experts from medicine, psychology, academia and the United Nations to address the medical and legal complexities and questions around a ban on conversion practices for gender identity.

Our panel consisted of:

Mr Victor Madrigal-Borloz, UN Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

Dr Adam Jowett, Chair of the British Psychological Society Psychology of Sexualities Section, Lead Author of the Government commissioned research ‘Conversion therapy: an evidence assessment and qualitative study’

Prof Zoë Playdon, Emeritus Professor of Medical Humanities, University of London

Dr Sophie Quinney, Clinical Director & GP Gender Clinician , Welsh Gender Service
